I found this book well written historical piece in the first person account of WWI. The author is not Theodore Roosevelt, but Theodore Roosevelt jr, the ex-presidents eldest son. He is also trying to make a point for a training program and compulsory military service that he summarizes at the end. He may have embellished the esprite de corp aspect to make his point but since I wasn't there I cannot say that for sure. I happen to agree with some of his points in the final chapter so they don't bother me as much as they would for someone on the other side of the issue.

Average Americans Theodore 18871944 Roosevelt 9781360487687 Books Reviews

Written by a capable veteran of WW I with an eye for what truely matters when the USA needs to come together in defense of our common principles, this is one of the best arguements for universal conscription that I have seen.
What we, as a nation, need to do for our freedoms and the sacrifices done by those who came before us should never be minimized nor forgten.
Average Americans is a great book and should be read as a quick exposure to sacrifices made and commitments taken.
The book was an easy read. It flowed well and left me with a strong feeling of time and place.
I highly recommend Average Americans to any armchair political/historian.
As Judge Hal Moroz points in his Introduction, this book by a member of the Greatest Generation has many lessons for modern-day America! Col. Roosevelt, the oldest son of President Teddy Roosevelt, warns us not to rely on politicians who promise to give us everything, including, "if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it [under Obamacare]. Period." Sound familiar?

A great book, brought back to life by Hal Moroz! Thank you, Judge!

"So many thoughts throughout this book still ring true today. A must read for every American. Take the words to heart
Audio Book that I have listen to more than once. rating has to be 20 words, so 3, 2, 1... done
I got good insight into what WW1 was like for the US. TR makes a compelling argument for universal service
TR is a good writer and has a knack for storytelling. I didn't realize until seeing "The Roosevelts" on public TV that he was such a prolific author. This book is an account, really a set of vignettes, about his experiences in World War I, fighting in France and marching into Germany when the war ended. What's especially interesting is that TR is focused on the honor of soldiering and the desperate need for efficiency and on-the-ground decision-making, and he merely casually lists the soldiers under his command who were wounded or killed without a word of sorrow. An interesting piece of history.
A quick read of the 26th Infantry Regiment and its activities during WWI with stories of individuals that give it a personal touch. Don't be fooled by the photo of paratroopers on the cover -- the 26th was primarily composed of rifle companies in WWI. Well written and engaging without being too didactic.
